For many of us, the holidays are a time of joy, full of celebration and the company of loved ones. Spending time in our communities is an essential part of our well-being.
However, this time of year can also bring challenges. There’s often an abundance of food and drinks—treats we rarely indulge in—and stress can run high as we navigate family dynamics or reflect on those we’ve lost. For some, the holidays may serve as a reminder of what’s missing in our lives, which can be difficult.
The key to navigating this season is balance. A balance of celebration, indulgence, and healthy habits, as well as recognizing stressors and managing them effectively.
Here are a few ways to help find that balance:
Keep Moving
Our bodies aren’t designed to remain stationary for long. Sitting too much can leave us feeling stiff and lethargic. If you’ve been in one place for a while, try standing up, stretching, walking around the house, or stepping outside for some fresh air.
After a big meal, consider going for a post-dinner walk to help with digestion. If your holiday season is on the quieter side, exercise can also help boost endorphins (those “feel-good” hormones) and lift your mood.
Move Together
Movement doesn’t have to be a solo activity! Invite others to join you for a walk, put on an online yoga video, or turn on some music and dance around together. Play a game that gets everyone up and moving. There’s so much joy in movement, especially when shared with others!
Stay Hydrated
During the holidays, drinks and snacks are everywhere. Don’t forget about water! Staying hydrated helps your body manage alcohol and richer foods and can even reduce unnecessary snacking. Remember: about 60% of our bodies are water, so drinking enough is essential to feeling your best. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip throughout the day.
Practice Mindful Eating
Holiday food is something to be enjoyed—so enjoy it! Slow down and savor the flavors. Taste it. Smell it. Chew it thoughtfully. Eating mindfully helps you feel more satisfied and can prevent overeating.
If you’re reaching for snacks, try putting them on a plate instead of eating straight from the bag. Seeing the quantity of food you’re eating can help you stay aware and intentional.
Take Time to De-Stress
Amid the busyness, don’t forget to care for yourself. Take a few moments to step outside, pause, and breathe deeply. Try simple relaxation techniques, like inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 4, and exhaling for 4. Prioritize sleep, too. Rest is so important for recharging both your body and mind. And don’t forget to find moments of joy—whether it’s listening to music, reading a favorite book, or enjoying some quiet time.
You Can Enjoy the Holidays AND Take Care of Yourself
It’s possible to celebrate, indulge, and stay balanced this season. Remember to move, hydrate, and rest—your body and mind will thank you for it! And if you’re currently in physical therapy, keep up with your exercises.
Wishing you a healthy, happy, and balanced holiday season!
